It’s been a low key dream of mine that people could just start doing science in new ways, without waiting for anyone’s permission.

Reading Experimental History has been a thrill because it feels like a step towards that.

It’s also fun as heck to read. Malcolm Gladwell (or whoever) can go boil his head.

Good for you Adam. Just started reading and I am a fan. May I suggest as a nickname XHist, pronounced not quite like Exist but close?

I've always loved Emerson's quote, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.” And your blog is a living embodiment of it! May abundance rain down on you in return for your risk... :-)

This is amazing, Adam. Congrats, and I’ll be sure to sign up for the paid! As I told my kids this morning (celebrating my own teen self), carpe diem!

Don't stop! Scientists should work for the public! I hope you never forget that. Upgrading to paid literally right now.

I love your perspective and your voice. When I tried to explain your peer review essay to my husband, he said “That sounds niche” which gave me pause. Then, today you informed us it was the #1 most read piece! Fantastic read. I’m not in a scientific field but did write grant applications for telehealth projects long before the widespread adoption of telemedicine. In that process, I had to source peer reviewed research on the subject. Those papers were root canal worthy at best. Congrats for lifting that veil!

This is excellent! The peer review article was so contrarian and niche, but I had the same feeling you did, so I cross-posted it. I work in psychiatry, and the bubbles that people in science live in are ridiculous. Thank you for doing this. Maybe I can follow your footsteps with what I'm writing. Maybe you can be the hero rather than the pop-sci villain you met =D

Exp His? Hmm, nope, that's not it.

In all seriousness, though, this blog was one of my favorite discoveries of 2022. (Nerd from Hacker News here!!) The content is genuinely interesting and your voice is funny and engaging, and there's a lot to be said for that.

I love a good leaping story! Your post made me think about something I have tacked to my wall that says "I am not trying to win the awards of a system built to fail, but I am tryng to love myself through the process of dismantling it" - Chani Nicholas. I am FOR THIS MISSION! also wondering if this might ever intersect with your work, have you ever seen what the folks over at Science for the People are doing? https://magazine.scienceforthepeople.org/ (I'm involved in a local chapter of SftP in the Twin Cities)
